high heels

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – West Orange, NJ, March 8, 2016 – Women don’t have to be a slave to fashion to admit that they like how high-heeled shoes look. Dealing with Tendinitis and Bursitis By JOHN CONNOLLY

MARCH 7, 2016

Expert advice and tips from Physical Therapy specialist John Connolly with Armonk Physical Therapy and Sports Training on staying active while healing and avoiding further injury.

Despite names like Tennis Elbow, Swimmer’s Shoulder and Jumper’s Knee, bursitis and tendinitis are conditions that strike average Joes as well as serious athletes, says John Connolly, a licensed physical therapist at Armonk Physical Therapy and Sports Training. They’re the most common type of repetitive motion injury, he explains, caused by an over-and-over-again movement-running, throwing a baseball, swinging a golf club-that puts strain on soft tissues and results in pain and inflammation. Repetitive motion injuries represent more than half of all the athletic-related injuries that send Americans to the doctor each year. (more…)

Skin Care: Dermatologists on Front Lines of Treating Sexually Transmitted Diseases

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – Albertson, NY, March 3, 2016 – While it’s natural to think about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as affecting the genitals, it’s also true that numerous STDs show up on the skin – which means dermatologists are often on the front lines of treating these highly common infections, according to Sonoa Au, MD, of Advanced Dermatology P.C.

The United States has the highest rate of STDs in the world, with 20 million such infections occurring each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Half of those occur in people under age 24. Depending on the STD, the infection can be spread through any type of sexual activity involving the genitals, anus or mouth and can also be spread through contact with blood during sexual activity.  (more…)

Diabetes Health: Tips for Protection From the Winter Sun

By Robert Levine, D.O., F.A.O.C.D., March 1, 2016

Even if you’re not heading south for a vacation in the sun, winter is no time to bypass protective measures for your skin. “When we think of the effects of cold weather on the skin, we tend to think about frostbite, chapping, and windburn,” says Dr. Robert Levine of Advanced Dermatology, P.C. “But many people aren’t aware that the sun is as damaging on the ski slopes as it is on the beach. In fact, winter sun can be even more harmful, in part because we don’t feel the heat and don’t perceive the risk but also because the sun’s rays are stronger at higher altitudes and when they reflect off snow.” (more…)

Electronic prescriptions to be mandatory in NY on March 27

Updated February 27, 2016
By Delthia Ricks  delthia.ricks@newsday.com

The clinician’s prescription pad, rivaled only by the stethoscope as a time-honored symbol of health care, officially becomes a relic of a bygone era next month when mandatory electronic prescribing takes effect statewide.

Leaders in the medical and dental communities say all systems are go for a March 27 start date. Pharmacies won’t accept paper scripts any longer, nor will they honor faxes. Emailing doesn’t constitute e-prescribing, experts say, which is conducted only through secure, dedicated systems. (more…)

Dollarphotoclub_WomanWashingFace285

Tips to prevent and treat redness

Millions of people suffer from blotchy skin. Red, white, or dark patches may be irritated or itchy and may appear anywhere on the body but are most common—and most visible—on the arms, neck, and face.

“The first thing to do in treating blotchy skin is to figure out what is causing it,” says Derek V. Chan, MD,  of Advanced Dermatology, P.C. “There is a wide range of factors that can cause blotchy skin, from weather to heredity to allergies and various environmental factors. While some of these causes are beyond your control, others can be managed and the blotchiness prevented or treated when it occurs.” (more…)

The Truth Behind Pilates

We all know what Pilates is—right?

BY CAROL CAFFIN AND LAURIE YARNELL, Feb 2016

Fitness and workout trends come and go; what’s hot today can become a joke tomorrow. (Remember those belted fat-melting “jiggle” machines and rolling massagers that populated fitness centers in the ’80s?) But when something works, and its benefits and results have been proven time and again, usually has staying power. (more…)

“Tuck, tuck, tuck!” You’ll hear it again and again throughout a barre class. Here’s what you are supposed to be doing, and how can you get the most out of the super tiny (almost invisible) move.

By Moira Lawler, 2/18/16

If you’re new to the barre technique or remember a time when you were, you’re probably familiar with one such mysterious term: the “barre tuck.” (more…)

Lower Back Pain Relief: 4 New Products That Ease The Strain

Feb 15, 2016 By Justin Caba@jcaba33

As we get older, our risk for lower back pain grows. On average, 80 percent of adults experience some form of lower back pain due to a mixture of physical inactivity, weight gain, and a job that is conducive to a sedentary lifestyle. Lower back pain is not only a problem for people in the workforce, but for employers too: Around one-third of all work-related disabilities are tied to lower back pain.

“Although lower back pain can result from the normal aging process, our lifestyle can sometimes trigger it or make it worse,” Dr. Kaixuan Liu, who is fellowship-trained in minimally invasive spine surgery, told Medical Daily. “Many everyday activities we do without thinking can make a huge difference to our lower spine health.” (more…)

Runners: Ready, Set, Strengthen Your Butt, 2/10/16

Strengthening the gluteus medius can be a key step in injury prevention.

Runners often hurt. Knees, feet, hips… Minor aches and pains and the threat of a serious, disabling injury plague runners of all ages and at all levels. “We see runners all the time who have had occasional discomfort in a knee,” says physical therapist John Fulton of Armonk Physical Therapy and Sports Training. “They take a couple of logical steps—scale back their runs, try icing, stretching, maybe new shoes—but the knee doesn’t improve and sometimes gets worse. The problem may be that the root cause of their discomfort is injury or weakness in the gluteus medius and the pain won’t be alleviated until that is corrected.” (more…)

5 Important Things to Know About TLIF, Feb 9, 2016

(HealthNewsDigest.com) – When it comes to spinal fusion surgeries, all types are definitely not alike. Case in point: TLIF surgery – a minimally invasive way to fuse together painful vertebrae so they heal into a single, solid bone – entails its own unique approach and purpose, helping many chronic back pain sufferers find lasting relief, according to Praveen Kadimcherla, MD, an orthopedic spine surgeon at Atlantic Spine Center. TLIF is just one of several forms of minimally invasive spinal fusion surgery, also known as MIS fusion. But the terminology surrounding this surgery, how it’s done and what benefits it offers can seem confusing to those with spine problems that aren’t effectively treated with more conservative measures such as medication, rest or physical therapy, Dr. Kadimcherla says.
