Why Everyone Is Talking About Microneedling

Stephanie Booth, 5/17/16

Maybe you have scarring from all the acne you had in high school. Or maybe you’ve got wrinkles that you are SURE make you look years older than you really are. Either way, we’ve got one (long) word for you: microneedling.

That’s right. Microneedling. It could be exactly what your skin is craving. Microneedling — aka skin needling, micro needling, or the slightly sci-fi-sounding “collagen induction therapy” — is a fast in-office procedure in which a dermatologist rolls a device covered with teeny-tiny shallow needles over your skin, essentially poking holes into its surface. (Don’t worry; a numbing cream is applied first.) (more…)

Tips for Seniors About Anti-aging Hormones, May 2016

A recent study found that fewer than 3% of Americans met the standard for a healthy lifestyle according to four criterion: eating a healthy diet, (basically eat more fruits and vegetables), exercising at least 150 minutes a week, not smoking, and maintaining a normal body weight.1

Functional medicine specialist Dr. Marsha Nunley, founder of H.E.A.L. Medical, emphasizes the importance of healthy habits as we age. “With senior citizens constituting the fastest-growing segment of our population, it is a public health challenge as well as an individual one to keep our bodies and minds functioning at optimal levels,” she says. “It is critical to eat a plant-based diet that maintains a healthy weight and to exercise regularly,” she says, “but it isn’t enough.” For people of all ages, but especially those at middle age and older, replenishing depleted hormones offers benefits beyond those achieved with a healthy lifestyle.” (more…)

Revolutionary collagen-boosting microneedling the hot new skin saver

May 12, 2016

Microneedling is taking the beauty industry by storm and could be the answer to every mature woman’s prayers. It is a technique that turns back the clock for a more youthful appearance. According to dermatology specialist Dr. Sonoa Au of Advance Dermatologu P.C.,microneedling is a minimally-invasive, collagen-inducing procedure for people who don’t mind a bit of prickly therapy to help combat acne scars, wrinkles or stretch marks on their skin. Also called skin needling, the procedure uses a device covered with tiny, shallow needles to essentially poke holes in the skin surface. “Those holes are actually therapeutic, since they cause a micro injury that prompts skin to stimulate collagen production, filling in fine lines, plumping the skin and contributing to a younger look,’ says Dr. Au. Kimchi for Your Gut Health

MAY 5, 2016 BY DR. MARSHA NUNLEY

How does your garden grow? Your inner garden is made up of trillions of bacteria that live on and in you – mostly in your intestines – and it influences your physical and mental health in ways you’ve never imagined. Some of the most exciting research on health and nutrition finds that  these bacteria – which constitute your microbiome – play a role not only in your properly functioning digestive system, but in weight control, cardiovascular health, immunities, and even moods and emotions. And just as a flower garden needs tending to keep weeds from crowding out the tulips, your inner garden needs tending to maintain a diverse mix of beneficial bacteria. Feed these bacteria the right foods and they will proliferate and keep harmful organisms out. But feed them junk and the bad bugs will flourish. (more…)

27002512_photo_2000258430

Runners often hurt. Minor aches and pains and the threat of a serious, disabling injury plague runners of all ages and at all levels. “We see runners all the time who have had occasional discomfort in a knee,” says physical therapist John Fulton of Armonk Physical Therapy and Sports Training. “They take a couple of logical steps – scale back their runs, try icing, stretching, maybe new shoes – but the knee doesn’t improve and sometimes gets worse. The problem may be that the root cause of their discomfort is injury or weakness in the gluteus medius and the pain won’t be alleviated until that is corrected.” (more…)
