To commemorate Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the women’s health organization, Our Bodies Ourselves (www.ourbodiesourselves.org), has created a short film in which Dr. Constance M. Chen, breast reconstruction surgeon, and her patients are interviewed about the choices women have for breast reconstruction after lumpectomy or mastectomy. The film reveals that most women eligible for breast reconstruction are not being informed of all their options for breast reconstruction. Furthermore, many women are not aware that the 1998 Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act gives women the option to choose any type of breast reconstruction they want and their insurance company is required by federal law to pay for it.
